The Gladiator Manager game enables players to strategically handle a squad of gladiators in ancient Rome. In this role, they are responsible for overseeing the team's training, statistics, and involvement in colosseum competitions in order to establish their house or "faction" as the most outstanding in the region.
Players can become dominant by buying and improving their gladiator team's key attributes. These attributes include strength, speed, endurance, and skill with weapons, which affect how well a gladiator performs in battles. Focusing on managing and enhancing these attributes is a key aspect of the game, influencing each character's fighting abilities. Initially, the gladiators you have will have low stats, but with time and success, they can be turned into formidable fighters.
Victories in battles also result in acquiring additional gold, which can be used to unlock new stat upgrades and improve weapons and armor to make your faction stronger than others. Therefore, it is important to enhance your team's essential statistics and effectively manage these gains.
Similar to the way gladiators were bought and sold in ancient Rome, players in the game can trade and purchase warriors from different factions. This feature enables players to create a team that suits their strengths and fighting style. Exceptional gladiators can be sold for a high price, and that money can be used to enhance the rest of the team. On the other hand, underperforming gladiators can be sold off to get rid of dead weight. Additionally, players can also buy skilled warriors from opponents and train them according to their own preferences. This trading system allows players to strategically customize their roster.
The main focus of the gameplay is competing against rival factions in structured tournaments. As your warriors succeed, your team will progress to larger competitions with more significant rewards and prestige. Winning results in gold and recognition, while losing means costly consequences and a hit to your team's reputation. Therefore, it is important to choose which tournaments to participate in carefully based on your team's readiness. Additionally, one can sabotage opponents using sneaky tactics (as explained later on). However, in fierce battles where weapons and physical combat are involved, the manager who strategically plans and enhances their fighters will ultimately come out on top.
Creating the perfect training schedule to improve your gladiators' skills is essential. As the Manager, you are responsible for determining their workout routines, weapon and armor training, rest periods, and other aspects. Customize these sessions to focus on improving their main stats and preferred fighting techniques, whether they specialize in heavy armor as "Secutors", use nets and tridents like "Retiarii", are skilled with daggers, excel as shield bearers, or are versatile fighters. Experiment to see which training strategies are most effective in the arena. While it requires active involvement, the payoff is well worth it.
Although victory in battle is typically determined by open combat, there are also sneaky tactics that can be used to weaken opponents beforehand. These tactics may include bribing guards to sabotage enemy gladiators by poisoning them or compromising their weapons and armor. Additionally, one could hire assassins to directly target wounded enemies. While these methods are not guaranteed to be successful, they can still give you an advantage and intimidate your rivals. It is important to remember, however, that your enemies may use similar tactics against you, so caution is necessary. Overall, sabotage adds a strategic element to the competition, allowing you to undermine opponents through espionage and social manipulation within Rome's networks, ultimately giving you the upper hand in battle.
Apart from the battles and practice, the game also dives you into a detailed portrayal of the Roman Empire during its peak. The arenas, buildings, important figures, traditions, attire, and secret agreements are all based on thorough research of the later Imperial Era. Players interact with Centurions, Senators, Vestal Virgins, as well as illegal markets and combat arenas. Each player encounters a variety of events, such as weddings and scandals, that they must manage in order to benefit their house. Therefore, the historical accuracy enhances the main focus on gladiatorial combat.
