The Sound Meter app is a free tool that measures the sound levels in your environment. With noise pollution being a significant issue, understanding the noise levels around you can assist in making informed decisions for your living space and taking steps to protect your hearing.
The app utilizes the microphone on the mobile device to record sound, then analyzes and measures the level of sound in the surrounding area, specifically the area closest to the microphone. The measurement of sound intensity is in Decibels (dB).
You will take measurements of sound for a specific duration of time. Following this, the Sound Meter app will analyze and show various noise levels: including the lowest, highest, and average levels during the measurement. The app will provide alerts if the sound level surpasses the acceptable limit for human hearing.
The data regarding the volume level captured during the measurement will be shown directly on the graph. The histogram illustrates the intensity of the sound at each time interval, displaying how the sound fluctuates from the start to the end of the measurement visually. This feature aids in determining whether the sound level during measurement remains consistent or changes.
Following the assessment of the noise in your surroundings, the app will provide you with a comparison chart showing the noise levels of various basic sounds. For instance, breathing is the quietest at 10dB, followed by the sound of a clock at 20dB. Medium-level sounds include a motorbike at 90dB, a subway at 100dB, and especially loud sounds such as gunfire reaching up to 140dB.
The Sound Meter keeps track of the times you measure sound, including the date, time, and specific noise index information, allowing for a more accurate comparison between different environments.
The setup of the app is simple and user-friendly. With its day-night mode, the app can be used comfortably at any time without straining the eyes due to light. Additionally, the app has low storage requirements, making it compatible with all devices.
The readings obtained through the app may not be as precise as those from dedicated sound meters. The accuracy of the measurements may be influenced by the quality of the phone's microphone or how the device is positioned during the recording process...
